So, there are times where things are just too awesome to leave to chance on whether you will see the photos or not.
May I present Cyprien Gaillard’s The Recovery of Discovery:
This piece is amazing.
- How often do you get to be encouraged to drink for free in public? Especially at a museum?
- In all seriousness, I think this is a thought provoking piece. Oftentimes, we see or hear about beautiful specimens of architecture that are destroyed because people do not have the money or the power to participate in a discussion about what to do with the piece of art. We know that we are in a constant war against decay. The artist acknowledges our war against entropy and our powerlessness to save everything of beauty. In this piece, we are invited to become a part of that discussion by participating in the destruction by drinking the beer rather than watching it unfold without our consent. Recovery of Discovery challenges us as viewers to think about us in relation to art. It asks us to consider what is worth saving and destroying and how we go about that. As the people drink the beer, the sculpture changes and degrades until it no longer exists.
And that’s awesome.
As always, happy and safe drinking.
